One of the basic solutions how to get exactly 1 unit segment is described below.
1. With the help of the ruler draw two lines intersecting in point A (Figure 1).
2. Measure two segments of 2 units each from point A on every of the two lines as shown in Figure 2, i.e. AB = BC = 2 and AD = DE = 2.
3. Join D with B and E with C. DB is parallel to EC and the distance between A and DB equals the distance between DB and EC (Figure 3).
4. Measure 2 units somewhere on EC. Let it be FG (Figure 4).
5. Join A with F and then with G (Figure 5).
6. The HI is the medial line of the AFG triangle (based on the fact DB is parallel to FC and that the distance between A and DB equals to the distance between DB and EC). That means HI equals 1 unit (half of the triangle's parallel side, i.e. half of FG).
