Hortulus Spectabilis Labyrinth
Opened to the public in June 2014, the Hortulus Spectabilis Gardens are a range of very distinctive gardens, among which a whole labyrinth-only one is a masterpiece in itself. The labyrinth consists in fact of several mazes planted within with an observation tower as a final touch.
The labyrinth, which was created in April 2003 from 18,000 2-year-old hornbeam seedlings. The maze covers an area of 1 ha and its walls are 2 meters high. The total length of its corridors is over 3.2 km! It is currently the largest hornbeam maze in the world. Walking through the maze guarantees great fun. At its heart there is a 20-meter high observation tower, the original structure of which was created in the image of a double strand of DNA.
From the last terrace of the tower there is a wonderful view of the surrounding villages, windmills, fields and forests, and in good weather you can see the Baltic Sea. You can also see the gardens surrounding the labyrinth here.
In order for the garden to maintain high aesthetics, it must be supervised by Mr. Gardener. He decides on the final appearance of the labyrinth. Thanks to his work, this space has no chance of becoming wild, i.e. getting out of control. An experienced gardener can organize this space so that it takes on a geometric pattern. It is a masterpiece of garden space organization, especially when it happens on a huge surface.
